Just mere days after the launch of Dbag Dating, I received some rather disparaging commentary, stating that only a highly traumatized individual would feel the urge to air their dirty laundry in public. Said commenter also kindly advised that I seek therapy, a piece of advice worth looking into, now that I actually live in a country with a decent health care system.
As I later found out, on the very same night that I got virally smashed, a dinner table conversation all the way in the 16th Arrondissement of Paris turned to the subject of this site. (You are welcome for the proverbial amuse-bouche, by the way.) A young man – French, educated, good-looking, apparently – remarked that a girl with enough romantic troubles to fill an entire blog must have something fundamentally wrong with her.
I was planning to shy away from self-clarification until absolutely necessary, but the anxiety-driven former publicist in me finally won over. Hence, please bear with me as I make a tentative attempt to explain the basic premise of Dbag Dating.
While I realize that the name of this blog (not to mention much of its content) might suggest a crazy chick on a mission to slander the entire male population, I can assure you that this is only partially case. We here at Dbag Dating are equal opportunity bashers, not limiting our expertise to members of the male sex. This site is meant to be a platform for everybody who has ever had a bizarre, mind-boggling encounter in the world of modern dating, which, by default, happens to be the majority of us Gen Y-ers.
Dbag Dating is an ode to dating in a world where attention spans are short and options are aplenty. It’s an ode to Paris and New York, to Tinder and OK Cupid, to the people who leave us with dropped jaws and broken libidos, struggling to understand how we must continue the search for that one and only manicorn*. The sole purpose of me “airing my dirty laundry” (and forcing my friends to do the same) is to put those stories out there and proliferate the message Michael Jackson warmed our hearts with in the late 90’s: You Are Not Alone.
*Manicorn (fem: Ladicorn) - The mythical creature who fulfills all of one's romantic expectations, making all the previous hurdles of dating worthwhile. Possibly as fictional as his Animal Kingdom counterpart. All credit for this beautiful term goes to Drama-Gnet.
Maybe moving to Paris wasn't the collection of Godart-inspired scenarios that I had envisioned, but what I did get out of this experience was far more valuable. In the struggle of having to adjust to a new culture as a formed adult, I acquired a new perspective. I learned to take into consideration peoples backgrounds and upbringings, judging them exclusively on the universal criteria of kindness and humility. I also developed the the ability to approach every situation with a grain of salt, and a sense of humor. And this is what Dbag Dating is about - an approach to dating that is not serious or heavy or judgmental. It is, quite simply, a collection of human stories and observations.
For this reason (as well as for more selfish/lazy motivations), I encourage all of you to send me your own Dbag Dating stories. I can assure you that my editing skills trump my writing skills any day, and I will do my best to make you sound as prosaic as the latest Modern Love submission. Granted, we are not trying to create the next Literotica here, but as long as your oeuvre falls within the blog's DNA, your voice will be heard. By the way, we are not against success stories either, just as long as you filter out the bullshit.
So go on and let your Kiki de Montparnasse fly, peoples. All submissions can be sent to dbagdating@gmail.com.
