Love Letters and Heartsprain Remedies

What helps YOU get through?

A couple of weeks ago, I fell in love.

Fine, "love" might be too loaded of a term here. Let’s just call it a serious crush, the kind that makes you feel all giddy and airy and butterflied up inside. I ate less, drank more, painted castles in the form of West Village townhouses in my head, and mentally celebrated every upcoming holiday together.

Needless to say, the object of my passion and I never made it too Chanukah, our romance over after a pathetic ten-day lifespan. I will spare you the details, let's just call it the Mysterious Case of the Disappearing Douchebag.

Before I had time to count my losses, something very similar happened to The Drama-Gnet. ( Clearly, luck becomes us. ) After a day of wallowing, she indulged in some serious retail therapy, got her shit together, and wrote a letter to the man who had helped her get back on her feet again - Dries van Noten.

Dear Dries,

You are always there for me, in the good times and the bad. You hug my body in sensuous yet reassuring ways that no other man ever could, making me feel empowered and delicate at the same time.
Thank you for being you and allowing me to be myself for as long as my wallet should last.

Amen,
TDM

This beautiful manifestation of true love got me thinking - what is my own heartsprain remedy? ( Not to be confused with heartbreak, which requires a completely different approach. ) What do I do when some jackass bashes his Nike 5.0s all over my spirit, leaving me feeling disheartened and empty like a popped helium balloon?

Then I realized that the answer was starting me straight in the face - SCANDAL. Yes, I'm talking about the ABC show with Kerry Washington, infused with so much passion and zest and delicious drama that my own commoner life quickly fades away into the background.

And so, I wrote my own letter.

Dear Scandal,

I love you so much it hurts. After a few hours of cuddling under the covers together, I feel a beautiful numbness spread over my body.
I start missing you the minute our time together is over, poring over YouTube for deleted scenes and fan videos. Sometimes, I imagine what my own fan video would look like. Sometimes, I imagine that I am Olivia Pope, having sex with the Leader of the Free World in an infinite pool of Loro Piana.
In an ideal world, we would stay in bed forever, uninterrupted by drudgerous tasks like work and social obligations.
If that's not love, I don't know what is.

Now tell us, what is YOUR secret heartsprain remedy? What makes you feel so satisfied and happy that all of life's problems miraculously disappear?

Most importantly, what should I watch now that season 2 of Scandal is almost over?!!

  1. Thank you for this delightful post, which just helped me with my own recent heartsprain. As for my secret remedy, it's my bicycle which can magically take me back to my carefree childhood as I joyfully ride down the street.
